Greetings, (A long-distance message while away for training.)
So I have now been attending classes for two days, with nine other "students" who do youth (family) ministry in their churches. Between the nine of us, we represent 6 states. We have two from California, two from Washington, Vermont, minnesota, Georgia and, of course, Idaho. We also are a wide range of ages from 22 to 51, and have a wide range of experience from one month to 20 years in youth ministry. It is great that we have already spent a lot of time sharing stories and offering advice. I look forward to spending three weeds with them.
On to course work: in our two days, we have been focused on three main topics. Foundations and Theology of youth ministry, History of youth ministry and Bible study. In our foundation course, we are looking at what the call through scripture is for youth and the church in teaching their youth. In our History course, we are looking at what the ebb and flow of programs and focus on youth ministry. We learned that Sunday school began in the 1860s, really as the only form of school available to children who were at the time working side-by-side with their parents in the factories. Then how Christian education and youth ministry has grown and changed since then. Finally, in our Bible study class, we are learning a new Bible study model called "Inductive Bible Study". I am very excited to come home nd teach this exciting new way to get into scripture.
Tonight, our class will be moving out to the camp Lutherwood, where we will be learning about outdoor ministry and participating in high and low ropes courses. So I will be sending you a new update next week with all the exciting adventures that occur at camp, as well as the courses we will study early next week.
Grace and peace to all.
In Christ,
Kati Skinner
